Youth Indoor Competitive
What is our Youth Indoor Competitive Program
Competitive youth sports and on-going physical activities can provide many benefits for children and adolescents. Positive experiences that sports and an active lifestyle bring play an important role in a young person’s life.
Ravens Volleyball Club has 3 primary goals for our competitive program:
– Teach, develop, and promote further growth of the 6 primary skills of volleyball
– Increase the knowledge of both offensive and defensive systems
– Grow the love of the sport and encourage athletes to play the game of volleyball for life!
How do we achieve our goals?
Our competitive program is delivered to athletes by coaches trained through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). This means each coach within our program is trained to the appropriate level:
– Developmental Coach for U12 to U16 (Train to Train)
– Advanced Coach for U17 and U18 (Learn to Compete)
We believe that the success of our club and each individual team is a culmination of coaches, athletes, and parents working together as one unified group to support the athletes and the program to the fullest.
Coaches will coach with compassion using a growth mindset framework to help develop self motivated athletes that are focused and fearless.
Athletes will use the competitive program to enhance their skills, viewing the program as a chance to get better every time they touch the ball. This is not a program for athletes looking to just hang out with friends, we have a recreational program for that.
Parents will support the program structure provided by the club through coaching decisions. Parents will not always agree with rotations, positions, playing time, substitutions, time outs, team bonding requirements during events, however, parents will encourage their athletes to be engaged to the fullest seeking to enhance their skills through both successes and challenges.
Schedule and Commitment
Our competitive program aims to practice a minimum twice a week during weekdays (Fridays excluded). Practices are run through available public school gyms in Spruce Grove and Stony Plain. Mandatory competitions for each age level are played through Volleyball Alberta’s Premier and Provincial events (once a month). It’s our goal to follow the practice to competition ratios outlined within Volleyball Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development framework:
– U12 to U16 70:30 practice to gameplay ratio
– U17 and U18 60:40 practice to gameplay ratio
Mandatory events listed above are organized at the club level, while optional tournaments are managed at the team level. Optional tournaments include tournaments organized by other clubs and Volleyball Canada Youth Nationals hosted outside Alberta.
Each team has a small budget that is set aside for specific training or team bonding events. These events are in addition to the practice times and mandatory tournaments. Specific training could include: dry land training, specialized training from volleyball focused trainers such as Limitless Athletics Volleyball Training. Team bonding events could include escape rooms, trampoline parks, bowling etc.
